Mathematics is a mandatory component of the national multi-subject test (NMT), because knowledge of this subject indicates the ability to think and master information – important skills for successful study in any specialty.
About this in an interview for “UP. Life” stated Tetyana Vakulenko, director of the Ukrainian Center for Evaluation of the Quality of Education.
Despite the debate about the difficulty of mathematics on the NMT, this subject remains mandatory in the test.
The leader of the UTSOYAO explained why the test tasks do not always correspond to real learning conditions, which are complicated by air alarms.
“Any testing of this format aims to divide applicants according to their level of preparation. Therefore, those who have mastered the school’s mathematics curriculum at least at the seventh grade level will definitely have passing scores.
The score they receive on the NMT is the result of their hard work and study in school. The circumstances are very difficult, but if the entrant plans to study at one of the most prestigious universities in Ukraine and wants to get a result of 180+, then he needs to further process the materials himself.” Vakulenko said.
She drew attention to the fact that, since last year, the concept of coefficients applied to the results of subject tests of the NMT has changed somewhat.
“Those entrants who chose majors related to mathematics have a higher coefficient. And for those who chose fields related to art, creativity, philology and the like, this coefficient is lower than in those subjects that are closer to their major.
Under the condition of high results in other NMT subjects, some missed individual topics in mathematics will not have an impact on admission.” – emphasized Tetyana Vakulenko.
At the same time, the option, when mathematics will become optional for entrants to humanitarian fields, is currently not being considered.
“Mathematics and language are good predictors of successful studies in any specialty. Mathematics is not so much about some formulas or specific problems, but about the ability to think and master information.
A modern professional must work with tables, graphs, charts; to understand which of the data arrays are valid and which are manipulative. And this is all mathematics teaches.” – summed up the director of UTSOYAO.
