Indian Embassy to resume issuing visas from Tripoli soon – sends more Libyans for training in India

Last Thursday (7 May) Libya’s Tripoli based Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the Indian Embassy in Tripoli will resume issuing visas for Libyans from Tripoli ”soon” – rather than from its Tunis Embassy.

The news came out of a meeting between Ashraf Al-Taeb, Director of the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Hifzur Rahman Mohammed, Ambassador of India to Libya held last Tuesday 5 May.

The Ministry said the meeting comes within the framework of supporting and strengthening the existing cooperation between the two states.

During the meeting, several bilateral cooperation issues of mutual interest were discussed, as well as ways to support and further develop them in a manner that serves the interests of both countries.

Convening the Libyan–Indian Joint Committee in Tripoli
The two sides also agreed to convene the Libyan–Indian Joint Committee for its upcoming session in Tripoli within the current year at the ministerial level, to be preceded by a preparatory meeting of experts from both countries.

Visit of Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Libya
The Indian Ambassador also referred to the anticipated visit of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Libya, heading a high-level delegation, to discuss key bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest, as well as to coordinate positions and mutual support in international forums.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of continuing consultation and ongoing coordination to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two friendly countries.

India sends more Libyans for training
These new steps come on the back of a revelation last Wednesday (6 May) by the Indian Embassy that it was increasing capacity building cooperation with Libya having sent a group of 11 Libyan officials, six from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation and five from the Ministry of Justice, for training.

The group are currently undergoing a 2-week specialised IT training under Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation – ITEC at the Centre for Development & Advanced Computing – CDAC, in Noida, from 06-19 May 2026.

This, in turn, follows on from an announcement by the Indian Embassy in Tripoli revealing that it had sent last Monday (4 May) three Libyan officials from the Tripoli based Ministry of Health to India for training.

They will be attending a two-week specialised training programme from 6 to 19 May on Digital Health Innovations at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in Mohali, again under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation – ITEC.
