Greece is introducing strict new rules to protect its natural beaches as authorities warn that fast-growing tourism is beginning to affect coastal ecosystems and areas previously considered “untouched”, with extensive restrictions on development and commercial activities being imposed as part of a coastal conservation initiative.
While tourism remains a vital part of the country’s economy, officials say a balance must be struck to prevent long-term damage, the publication said. Express.
What is the “Unwalked Beaches” initiative?
Known as “Unwalked Beaches” (Apatites Paralies), the regulation sets out environmental protection measures. 13 locations have been added to this status, bringing the total to 251 and significantly expanding the network of protected coastlines.
These are beaches located in areas that are part of the Natura 2000 network – an EU-wide network of protected areas created to protect the most valuable and threatened species and habitats. Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world, covering almost 20% of the EU’s territory and 10% of its marine territory. Established under the EU Habitats and Birds Directives, it protects biodiversity while enabling sustainable human activity, acting as a crucial tool for nature conservation.
Since these areas are very sensitive, the regulations prohibit the granting of concessions for sunbeds, umbrellas or other tourist infrastructure; construction of permanent structures; operating motor vehicles or commercial activities that could disrupt the ecosystem; any activity that could alter the geomorphology of the beach or disturb local fauna such as sea turtle nests.
With 251 beaches now classified as ‘Unwalked Beaches’, Crete came out as the big winner. The list covers the critical coastal areas of Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi. This includes all the beaches recently named by Tripadvisor among the best in the world – Balos and Falassarna, which have faced overcrowding problems in West Chania, Gavdos and various secluded bays along the southern coast, as well as the iconic Elafonisi pink beach, which protects its rare flora and fauna.
Also included on the list are Halikounas on Corfu, Pori and Italida on Ano Koufonisi and Kastro Beach on Lefkada.
