Cooperation : Morocco and France are consolidating their cooperation in the forestry sector, marked for more than three decades by the implementation of structuring programs covering strategic areas such as sustainable management of protected areas, preservation of biodiversity, reforestation.

Morocco and France reaffirmed their desire to strengthen their strategic partnership for forest ecosystems during a meeting held on Monday, May 4 in Rabat between the Director General of the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF), Abderrahim Houmy, and Éléonore Caroit, Minister Delegate to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, in charge of the Francophonie, international partnerships and French people abroad.

On this occasion, the two officials praised the quality and depth of Moroccan-French cooperation in the forestry sector, marked for more than three decades by the implementation of structuring programs covering strategic areas such as the sustainable management of protected areas, the preservation of biodiversity, reforestation, the health and resilience of forest ecosystems, the development of urban and peri-urban forests, adaptation to climate change as well as the monitoring and development of forest resources. The discussions also made it possible to underline the strategic importance of the “GhabatiHayati – Ma Forêt Ma Vie” program, financed by the French Development Agency (AFD) to the tune of 103 million euros, as the first major international cooperation initiative dedicated to supporting the implementation of the “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” strategy. This program constitutes a structuring lever for the modernization of forest governance, the sustainable management of forests and national parks, as well as for supporting the transition to a low-carbon, resilient and inclusive economy.

In the dynamic of strengthening Moroccan-French cooperation, the twinning project carried by ANEF, with the support of the European Union, constitutes a structuring lever of institutional and technical partnership, promoting the co-construction of innovative solutions adapted to realities on the ground. Part of the “Al Ard Al Khadraa – Green Earth” program, this project reflects a common ambition to promote modern, sustainable and resilient management of forest ecosystems.

Both parties agreed on the importance of further strengthening technical exchanges, in order to deepen institutional synergies and broaden prospects for sectoral cooperation. A high-level exchange visit by ANEF officials to France will be organized in June 2026, with the aim of further consolidating technical cooperation, strengthening institutional partnerships and opening new perspectives for collaboration between the two countries in the service of forestry, environmental and climate issues.
