“Prime Minister Tusk is against strengthening Poland’s security. Loyalty to Berlin comes first,” said former President of Poland Andrzej Duda, commenting on remarks by Prime Minister Donald Tusk regarding the possible redeployment of U.S. troops from Germany to Poland. The opposition has also sharply criticized the Civic Platform leader for opposing such a scenario.
Ahead of the weekend, the Pentagon announced a decision to withdraw around 5,000 American troops from Germany. The operation is expected to take place over the next 6–12 months. Asked before the weekend about the reasons for the decision, U.S. President Donald Trump did not give a direct answer, but noted that the number of U.S. troops stationed in Germany would still exceed that figure.
A public debate has since emerged over where the American forces could be relocated. One of the potential destinations under discussion is Poland. Although no official confirmation has been issued by any side, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has assured that he does not intend to take actions that could harm Germany.
“I will not allow Poland to be used in any way to undermine solidarity or cooperation at the European level,” he said.
The prime minister’s statement has drawn strong reactions online. Former President Andrzej Duda also weighed in.
“Prime Minister Tusk is against strengthening Poland’s security. Loyalty to Berlin comes first. Everything clear?” he wrote on platform X.
The prime minister’s remarks have also been addressed by opposition politicians as well as representatives of the current head of state, Karol Nawrocki.
“How can one place the interests and comfort of a neighboring state above one’s own security? This is astonishing. I once heard European diplomats use the term ‘jawohl government.’ Today, many are beginning to understand it better,” said Marcin Przydacz, Head of the International Policy Bureau of the President of Poland.
