The “ONE Albania” company has started increasing the prices of mobile services, through indexation with the average annual change in consumer prices, starting from May 1, 2026.
The price increase will be up to 2.2%, according to the average annual inflation rate published by INSTAT. Applying such a practice raises concerns about the long-term effect it may have over time. An annual indexation, moreover in periods when inflation can be significantly higher, would bring progressive increase in communication costs for Albanian users.
“Monitor” magazine addressed an official request to the Competition Authority, to obtain a position from this institution on the fact that the practice of automatic price indexing of electronic communications services poses problems related to competition law.
The Competition Authority states that this issue is one of the elements of the in-depth investigation that this institution opened in the retail market of mobile services in November last year.
“We inform you that during the in-depth investigation procedure in the retail market of mobile services, the Secretariat of the Competition Authority will also evaluate the application of the CPI norm, in the sense of the provisions of Law No. 9121, dated 28.07.2003 ‘On the protection of competition’. The investigation procedure is currently ongoing”, says the response of the Competition Authority.
