Former politician Juris Dobelis will celebrate his 86th anniversary on July 8 this year.
The magazine “Privatā Dzīve” reports that the former member of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia and several convocations of the Saeima Juris Dobelis around Easter time, ended up in a fine care home in Pārdaugava, because he could no longer stand up on his own. The situation in the nursing home has improved, and Juris is already walking a little and hopes to return home soon.
“I’m not particularly young anymore, but I remember May 4, 1990 well, and even now I have tears in my eyes,” says the former deputy who voted for the Declaration of Independence.
He gave his last interview to the “independent” in 2020.
“The question was once asked: who is the biggest rupeklik among Latvian deputies? It turned out to be me. But it happened that way. At a session of the Saeima, I spoke from the rostrum about the animal protection law. One member of the “Concord Center” mumbled something about the occupation. I immediately replied: “Occupant, keep your mouth shut!”, and then the then Speaker of the Saeima, Gundars Daudze, read me a light moral about behavior in the Saeima, and my next sentence from the podium was “Death to the occupiers!”… And that’s how I was baptized as Latvia’s biggest scumbag. Did I say something rude?” asked Juris Dobelis rhetorically in the interview.
