For the jury of the European Newspaper Awards, which since 1999 have rewarded “the entire spectrum of creative work” in journalism, PÚBLICO is the European newspaper of the year in the category of titles with national coverage. The verdict is brief but categorical: “An example for European newspapers, both in print and online.”
The composition of the covers, with “very well framed photographs”, the typography of the titles, the refined composition of the infographics and the quality of the multimedia narratives help to support the jury’s decision.
The main category “European newspaper of the year” also awarded the The Province (location, Spain), the Kathimerini (weekly, Greece) and, in the new subcategory “specialized newspapers”, the Zeitung für Kommunale Wirtschaft (Germany).

In addition to the main prize, six works produced by the PÚBLICO team were also distinguished. The explainer “How does the State Budget affect your day-to-day life?”, with illustration and animation by Gabriela Pedro and José Carvalheiro (and script by journalists Cláudia Carvalho Silva and Marta Moitinho Oliveira), won in the video category.
In the infographics chapter, two works were awarded, both signed by José Alves and Francisco Lopes: “The Lusíadas stopping at 40 stops”, a “journey aboard a book” written by Luís Miguel Queirós, and “133 cardinals, one Pope”, in which journalist Natália Faria clarifies how the election of a new pope is carried out.
The awards in the multimedia narrative category were awarded to “On the other side of the wall”, by Joana Gonçalves (text), José Carvalheiro (illustration and animation) and Nuno Moura (web design); a “Dyslexia. Learning to read with a brain that plays tricks on us”, by Sofia Neves (text), Cátia Mendonça (infographics, web design), Gabriela Pedro (infographics, illustration and animation), Manuel Roberto, Daniel Rocha (photography) and Francisco Lopes (web design); and to the dossier “Tents in the Lisbon area: the return of a problem that never disappeared”, by Teresa Serafim (text), Joana Gonçalves (video), Daniel Rocha (photography), Cátia Mendonça, Francisco Lopes, Gabriela Pedro (infography), Miguel Silva (file).
