Synopsis: Suspect accused of promising a businessman’s son a job in exchange for money and failing to deliver.
Police in Siem Reap province yesterday apprehended a military police officer for accepting more than $10,000 in exchange for giving a businessman’s son a job in the military.
Lieutenant Colonel Hem Vuthy, a Deputy Chief of the provincial criminal office, named the suspect as Kong Vireak, 41, a military police officer with the Siem Reap Provincial Military Police.
According to the victim’s complaint, on February 24, 2023, Ma Vireak received $10,500 from the plaintiff Sok Sophal, 56, a businessman living in Roka Krav commune, Takeo province’s Daun Keo City, and promised a military job for Sophal’s son.
Sophal’s son Sok Sopha, 26, had just completed university in Phnom Penh and was jobless.
After receiving the money, the two parties signed a contract saying that the amount will be refunded if Maj Virak could not find the plaintiff’s son the job in three months.
“But over the past three years, the suspect could not secure a military job for the victim as pledged. And when the victim demanded refund, he did not do it,” he said.
“To claim his payment, the victim filed a case against him with the provincial police and court,” he added.
He said that the suspect was accused of “fraud” under Articles 377 and 378 of the Criminal Code and faces a jail term of six months to three years.
The suspect was still being interrogated at Siem Reap Provincial Police Headquarters, he added.
