The University of Sarajevo (UNSA) issued a public invitation to all teachers, associates, employees and students for a peaceful and dignified gathering scheduled for April 29, 2026 at 9:30 a.m., on the Square of the First Police Brigade in front of the City Hall building in Sarajevo.
The occasion is the proposal of the Regulatory Plan “Quadrant C – Marijin Dvor”, which UNSA warns directly encroaches on the space, property and long-term development vision of the University, and that its adoption would threaten the daily safety of thousands of students and employees.
At three extraordinary sessions, the UNSA Senate took a clear position – the plan must not be adopted in its current form, and it is required to return it for additional coordination with the University, which is the owner of the land included in this plan.
A particularly controversial point is the planned construction of a two-way road between the buildings of the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. “That road should connect the new elite settlement, business and shopping centers with the main city road, which seriously threatens the safety of our students and employees,” UNSA said. In addition, the plan envisages parking spaces that would completely cover the existing green areas, which, as they state, “compromises the vision of a green and open Campus”.
The Rector’s Office warns that solutions were made without the participation of professionals from the University, despite their constant readiness for dialogue.
“University space is not ‘building land’ for the purposes of building elite settlements, but a space of knowledge, science and public good. The proposed solution puts the interests of capital before the public interest and destroys the unique functional unit of the University,” the invitation states.
The UNSA emphasizes that the purpose of the protest is not to oppose the urban development of Sarajevo, but to defend the safety of those who live in the campus every day and to preserve an institution of special social importance.
