Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted again, this time for releasing a photo of figures made from shells that Justice Department officials say pose a threat to President Donald Trump, three sources have confirmed. CNN.
This is the second attempt by the administration of the current head of the White House to prosecute one of his biggest political opponents.
Trump has long insisted that his political opponents face charges, including the former FBI director whom he sees as a key figure in an alleged attempt to “abuse” the justice system against him.
Last May, Comey posted a photo on social media of shells on a beach forming the numbers “86 47,” which critics argued referred to the removal or assassination of Trump.
The term “86” is common restaurant and colloquial slang meaning to throw out, cancel, or get rid of something, and Trump is the 47th president of the United States.
Comey wrote under the photo:
“Interesting shell formation while walking on the beach.”
Almost immediately after the announcement, Republicans and administration officials sharply criticized Comey, and then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that Comey would be investigated by the Secret Service for what she called an “assassination” of Trump.
The Secret Service summoned Comey for an hour-long interview with agents in Washington, an unusual move for the agency amid an uncertain threat. Comey told investigators he saw the shells on a beach in North Carolina.
Comey removed the post the same day, writing on social media that he didn’t assume the shells represented a “political message” and that he “didn’t realize that some people associate those numbers with violence.”
“It never occurred to me, but I am against violence in any form, so I removed the post,” he wrote.
Last September, the Justice Department first filed charges against Comey, accusing him of lying to Congress about leaking information to the press. The case was dismissed late last year by a federal judge.
The former director fell out of favor with Trump before he was first elected president as Comey’s agency investigated the Trump campaign and ties to Russia. Comey was fired in the months after his inauguration.
Since he was fired, Comey has become a fierce critic of Trump and a key enemy of Republicans in the White House and on Capitol Hill.
Reports are surfacing that the Trump DOJ has indicted former FBI Director James Comey over his social media post featuring seashells forming the number “8647.”
