Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov met on Sunday, April 26, in Pyongyang with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. Moscow’s news agency reports that the two have agreed on “long-term” military cooperation between north korea and the Russian Federation.
Korea the North has sent thousands of troops – as well as missiles and ammunition – to back it up Russia in the war against Ukraine.
They were deployed to Russia’s Kursk region in western Russia to push back the Ukrainian army, which occupied the area from August 2024 until spring 2025.
South Korea estimates that around 2,000 North Koreans were killed in the War of Ukraine.
In return, according to some experts, North Korea receives financial aid, military technology, food and energy from Russia, which allows Pyongyang to circumvent heavy international sanctions that have been imposed on the outlawed North Korean nuclear and ballistic programs.
“We have agreed together with the (North Korean) Ministry of Defense that our military cooperation will take place on a sustainable, long-term basis,” Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said during his meeting with Kim Jong Un, as quoted by Tass.
“This year promises to be at least as rich in the field of bilateral contracts in many areas,” he said.
The Speaker of the Duma, the lower house of the Russian Parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, thanked North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un on Sunday for the “liberation of Kursk” thanks to sending BANDS to repel the Ukrainians, according to Tass.
A Russian delegation arrived in Pyongyang on Saturday to attend a ceremony to open a memorial complex honoring those who were killed supporting Russia’s war effort against Ukraine.
In 2024, the two countries signed a military treaty obliging each to provide military assistance “without delay” in the event of an attack against the other.
