“We must show Russia and America that Europe and Poland are responsible for their own security,” said Prime Minister Donald Tusk at an informal EU summit in Cyprus. His statement was quoted by the official account of Civic Platform (KO). The recording featuring the prime minister is widely commented on online, mostly in one way – the head of government has launched an open attack on relations with Poland’s biggest ally.
In a conversation with the Financial Times published on Friday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that “the biggest and most important question for Europe is whether the United States is ready to be as loyal as described in our treaties (NATO)”. At the same time, he added that Russia could attack a member of the Alliance within a timeframe of “months rather than years”.
On the day the interview was published, an informal meeting of EU heads of government and state was taking place in Cyprus. Among the topics discussed were security issues. During his remarks to the media, the prime minister once again shocked with his words about the United States.
“This is, however, a breakthrough in thinking. A few months ago, if I had said this, some would have frozen in fear or who knows what, so let’s allow this thought to gain momentum. I will also have the opportunity to speak with leaders today; yesterday I had several such meetings, and above all I want to make them aware that the Russian threat is not only a problem of the war in Ukraine and that it genuinely concerns the entire European Union, not just the countries of the eastern flank, and that we have no time – truly – and here I also rely on many of our allies who are sending us various signals about these threats – we really must avoid any aggressive steps from Russia, we must show ourselves, America, and Russia that Europe, Poland, the eastern flank are truly ready to defend themselves,” he said.
His statement was published on the official accounts of Civic Platform (KO). There, Poland’s biggest ally, the United States, was also directly juxtaposed with Russia.

Tusk’s remarks triggered a wave of comments.
