British Jamaican author, Danielle Wong celebrated her debut book at a special launch party at the Bankside Hotel in Southwark, south London, on Saturday, October 24.

The work – Under Spiritual Attack: The Devil’s Plan vs God’s Plan – was born out of some of what she describes as the most devastating experiences of her life and her desire to share how God sustained her through them.

The book, she says, also recounts some of the most extraordinary experiences of her life, some of which took place in Jamaica. These include hearing God’s voice giving her specific instructions, receiving a prophetic message about the future, and experiencing a miraculous healing of her severely broken leg.

Wong, a UK-born mother of four currently living in Cambridgeshire, is a nurse, content creator alongside her husband Jermaine, and now a first-time author, who told The Weekly Gleaner of the pride she has in her Jamaican identity.

“My father is from Portmore, St Catherine, and my family are the Redwoods. There are quite a few Redwoods in Jamaica, so I am sure some readers may recognise the family name! Wong is my married name. My husband is Chinese-Jamaican so, although the surname originally comes from China, our family’s Wong name comes through the Chinese-Jamaican community.

“I visit Jamaica regularly and still have family there. I am currently going through the process of applying for my Jamaican citizenship so we could spend more time there and eventually live there. I mostly spend time in St Catherine and one of my absolute favourite places is Portland.”While Wong has spent most her life in the UK, she feels a close affinity with her Jamaican roots and takes every opportunity she can to visit there.

“For me, Jamaica is a beautiful contrast to life in England. The warm weather, the beaches, the rivers, the fresh fruit growing naturally on the trees, and the natural spring water are all reminders of God’s incredible provision through His creation. I feel particularly close to God when I am in Portland, surrounded by its breathtaking natural beauty. We have a family home there, and nearby is a place we call Big River, surrounded by mountains and lush greenery, with beautiful, clear water flowing through the rocks.”

    miraculous healing

Jamaica now, however, holds an even deeper spiritual significance for Wong because of an extraordinary event she experienced there in May 2025.

“I travelled to Jamaica for my grandad’s 90th birthday with a severely broken leg, with crutches and still struggling to walk after surgery; a wheelchair had to meet me from the airplane. During our stay in Portland, God woke me in the middle of the night and instructed me to go down to Big River, where my husband would pray for my healing.

What happened at that river became one of the most significant experiences of my life. God miraculously healed my leg there, and the events that followed became a central part of my book. So, Jamaica is not simply somewhere I visit because of my heritage. It is a place where I personally encountered the voice of God and the healing power of God. It will forever hold an incredibly special place in my heart.”

In the book, Wong shares her personal testimony of a two-year period during which she and her family endured a series of devastating events, including being detained under the Mental Health Act and the devastating murder of their 22-year-old son, Keelen, in October 2023.

“In Western society, experiences involving demons or spiritual activity are not something we often hear about or openly discuss. When someone behaves unusually or describes experiences they cannot explain, the assumption is often that it must be a mental health issue. Someone claiming to have experienced demonic activity may struggle to be taken seriously or believed at all.

“However, in Jamaica, across the Caribbean and in many African countries, accounts of witchcraft, demonic activity and supernatural experiences are much more openly discussed and are familiar to many communities. Many Jamaicans will be familiar with stories surrounding obeah or experiences that people attribute to spiritual forces. Many of us have grown up hearing Bible stories about Jesus healing the sick, performing miracles, and speaking to His people. But, do we believe that God still works in those ways today?”

    significant milestone

Wong continued: “There were many challenges which came our way as a family. My experience in Jamaica challenged me to put my faith into action. I travelled there with a severely broken leg, and I returned believing I had received a miraculous healing, this was later confirmed by an X-ray and a doctor who said it was completely healed after months of being told it wasn’t healing at all!

“I did not want readers to simply hear me saying that God is powerful. I wanted them to read about the experiences that convinced me personally of His power.”

Wong said that the launch of her debut book represents a significant milestone, not only in her journey as a writer but also in her personal journey of faith, and that she has a key message she would like readers of her book to take away with them.

“I want readers to know that God’s presence is not just something we read about in the Bible or hear preached from the pulpit. I believe I have experienced His presence, His protection, and His faithfulness in some of the darkest moments of my life. That is what I want people to take away from my story. Not what the enemy does, but how faithful, powerful, and mighty our God is. He is in control and He is sovereign.”

Further details about the book, events and future announcements can be found on Wong’s website: www.womanoffaith.co.uk.
