Washington/The Government of Donald Trump announced this Tuesday that it will host Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro and his family in the United States after he left Brazil after being defeated in the presidential elections against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“The State Department will issue visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family members and allow them to enter the United States,” a senior Administration official told the press on condition of anonymity.
The far-right senator will be able to enter US territory despite the fact that the Brazilian Federal Police canceled his ordinary and diplomatic passports this Tuesday, after he failed to comply with a court order to hand them over as part of an investigation into alleged corruption.
The far-right senator will be able to enter US territory despite the fact that the Brazilian Federal Police canceled his ordinary and diplomatic passports this Tuesday.
The announcement came after Bolsonaro allies claimed that the defeated candidate had taken a flight to the United States, according to Brazilian media such as O Globo and Folha de São Paulo.
On Monday, one day after losing the elections to Lula, Flávio Bolsonaro received a court order to hand over his passports within 24 hours, in addition to being prohibited from leaving the country.
The decision was handed down by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes, who was also in charge of the process in which Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio’s father and former Brazilian president, was sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempted coup d’état.
Flávio Bolsonaro is being investigated by the Supreme Court in a case for alleged money laundering, according to the newspapers O Estado de S. Paulo and O Globo.
The senator lost the second round of the presidential elections with 48% of the votes, compared to the 52% obtained by Lula, results that the far-right leader questioned during the election night.

Trump, a political ally of the Bolsonaro family, affirmed this Tuesday that the Brazilian elections were “fraudulent”, although, when asked if he would take any action in this regard, he responded that he does not govern Brazil.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, Flávio’s brother and former deputy, remains in the United States, where he has settled after declaring himself a victim of judicial persecution.
