The coalition parties in Avannaata Kommunia have approved Ilulissat Invest ApS’s application to build a hotel with the name “Hotel Anchor Bay”. The hotel is to be located in Nuugaarsuk north of the city. The builders plan for the hotel to have 148 beds and to be completed in the summer of 2028, if construction proceeds as planned.
The lack of accommodation in Ilulissat is not news. But now there is a new hotel on the way in the city, which is extremely popular among tourists.
The application for the new hotel was considered by the elected representatives of Avannaata Kommunia at the municipal board’s meeting on 25 September. The parties behind the post of mayor, Siumut and Naleraq, voted with a majority for the final approval of the application.
Their speaker, Ujuut Olsen (S), said the following to the municipal council about the application:
– We from Siumut and Naleraq note that the case has been heard twice. It is gratifying that private actors in Ilulissat are working so hard, and we should support that.
– We approve the application in its current form, says Ujuut Olsen.
The opposition did not vote in favor. Among other things, they justified the decision with the fact that they questioned whether the construction of the road to the future hotel had been handled according to the rules.
Mayor Lars Erik Gabrielsen (S) said that he is completely convinced that the administration has followed the rules.
However, it must also be investigated whether the rules have been followed in connection with the road construction to the hotel, which the opposition has wanted.
Two owners
The company that has applied to build the hotel is called Ilulissat Invest ApS. The company has named the upcoming hotel, Hotel Anchor Bay. The company has two owners, Flemming Bisgaard and Peter Jensen.
The hotel is to be located in the northern part of the city, in Nuugaarsuk, which is not yet developed. The hotel will be on three floors with 80 rooms and a total of 148 beds. The hotel will have an area of 2,210 m². According to the plans, it should be completed on July 1, 2028.
Avannaata Kommunia has previously sent the application for the project out for consultation. In the consultation material, there are illustrations of how the hotel will look. See more here.
Staff housing and expansion
According to the plan for the project, which has now been approved by a majority of the elected representatives, the hotel can also be expanded after completion.
In addition, five staff residences are to be built. They must lie between the hotel and the current road towards the airport. In addition, three small cabins are to be built, which are referred to as Northern Lights cabins.
The hotel will have a car park and the plan also includes a footpath in front of the hotel, close to the sea.
