The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, questioned this Monday the intervention of the United States in Venezuela after the capture of Nicolás Maduro and stated that Washington conveys the idea that it now “rules” the country, something that, in its opinion, represents the end of its sovereignty and harms democracy.
“What the United States did with Venezuela is very serious“said Lula in an interview with CNN International in New York, where he is to participate in the United Nations General Assembly.
“The sovereignty of the country ended. That is not good for the United States, it is not good for Venezuela and it is not good for democracy either.“he added.
According to the Brazilian leader, the current interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, should call elections so that Venezuelans can decide who should occupy the Presidency.
“Because, from the way the United States treats Delcy, it seems like he was their boss,” he said.
Rodríguez, who was Maduro’s vice president, traveled to New York this Monday to participate in the Assembly. During his visit, he plans to meet with US President Donald Trump, in what will be his first face-to-face meeting less than a year after Maduro was arrested and deposed in a US military operation.
The meeting, which will be a few kilometers from the prison where Maduro is being held accused of drug trafficking, It will take place weeks after the controversial agreement by which Venezuela gave up part of its oil reserves to the United States.
In the interview, the Brazilian president also avoided defending the former Venezuelan president against the accusations he faces in the United States.
But he stated that, If Maduro committed crimes, he must be investigated and tried, but not before questioning whether a country can accuse and forcibly take away a leader of another State.
The Brazilian leader, who is seeking re-election, was emphatic in saying that Trump was elected to govern the United States and not to impose his will on other countries.
In this sense, he asked the White House to refrain from interfering in the Brazilian elections on October 4.
Lula is convinced that the United States is going to intervene in the elections in favor of Flávio Bolsonaroson of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, an old ally of Trump, and today convicted and imprisoned for attempted coup d’état.
According to the latest electoral polls, Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro are in a technical tie less than two weeks before the October 4 elections.
