The institution provided the initiation of corresponding investigations with the objective of determining the circumstances and causes of the accident. The officer lost his life while participating in the intervention actions carried out in the district of Inambari, province of Tambopata.
The deployment was carried out by Southern Operational Commandthrough the Second Jungle Brigade for the Protection of the Amazon. Members of the National Police of Peru, representatives of the Public Ministry and personnel of the Peruvian National Police also participated in the operation. National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp).
The intervention aimed to identify and destroy infrastructure and equipment allegedly used for the illegal extraction of minerals. According to the Ministry of Defense, during the operation they were removed from circulation 15 rustic camps, nine rafts, nine engines, a cargo motorcycle and three electric generators.
They were also destroyed 14 hoppersin addition to hundreds of meters of pipes, steel ropes and other implements used in mining activities. The set of machinery, infrastructure and logistical resources intervened was valued at more than S/8.3 million.
After learning of the death, the Navy expressed its regret for the loss of the officer and highlighted his dedication, vocation for service and commitment to the Homeland.
The institution indicated that it accompanies with respect and solidarity the family members, comrades-in-arms and loved ones of Second Lieutenant Álvaro Ernesto Cáceres Chávez, and affirmed that it will provide them with the required assistance and support.
Investigations will continue to establish the exact circumstances of the incident that occurred during the intervention against illegal mining in Madre de Dios.
