Plans have been made for an unusual weekend in Ilulissat. In Itisuarsuk, everyone will be able to participate in ice swimming of up to 250 meters on Saturday 25 July. A swimmer who has swum four kilometers in the sea this year also takes part.
The first ice swimming festival in Greenland will be held on Saturday in Ilulissat. This is stated by the association Siku Svøm, which organizes the event. The association collaborates with Avannaata Kommunia regarding the event.
There is swimming at Itisuarsuk, not far from the airport in Ilulissat. Anyone who wants to participate can join, and it is stated that the swimming takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
When swimming only in swimwear, different distances of 25, 50, 100 or 250 meters can be completed. The water is colder than five degrees.
– The goal is to make Greenland an attractive ice swimming destination and at the same time increase sea safety by showing that you can survive in the cold water for longer than the 1-2 minutes that many believe.
– Among the participants is the Danish elite swimmer Henry Stokholm, who earlier this year completed the world’s third longest ice swim of 4 kilometers, says the head of the association Siku Swimming, Bo Krüger.
The organizers hope that both locals and tourists will show an interest in participating.
