Dominica will soon appoint a special envoy to coordinate the country’s engagements with the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU), Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced.
Skerrit said discussions with the British Government were continuing following the United Kingdom’s decision to impose visa requirements on Dominican nationals.
Citing security and due diligence concerns, the European Union has given Dominica and four other Caribbean countries until June 1, 2028, to end their Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programmes or face the possible loss of visa-free travel to the Schengen Area.
The proposed envoy will lead and coordinate Dominica’s advocacy with both British and European officials.
“We continue to engage the British Government,” Skerrit said, adding that the appointment should be formally announced within the coming weeks.
Dominica has been seeking the restoration of visa-free access to the United Kingdom while also responding to European concerns surrounding its citizenship-by-investment programme.
The Prime Minister did not identify the individual being considered for the diplomatic assignment.
