Human remains are discovered at a location in Zubin Potok, the authorities begin excavations for a suspected mass grave from the war in Kosovo.
The teams of the Kosovo Police, the Institute of Forensic Medicine and EULEX have started field examinations to determine the identity of the victims.
Excavations are taking place in the village of Kalludër e Vogël, where it is suspected that there may be remains of missing persons during the last war in Kosovo.
Mortal remains and pieces of clothing were found at the scene, which have already been examined by forensic experts.
Doubts are related to the fate of 23 intellectuals from Mitrovica, who disappeared on April 19, 1999. The authorities are investigating whether the remains found belong to this group of people.
Teams of anthropologists and forensic specialists have entered the cordoned off area under strict security measures, while the identification process is expected to continue in the coming days.
The doctor of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Ditor Haliti, has confirmed that the remains found are of human origin and are of interest to the forensic investigation.
“They are of human origin and the works will continue in the following days”, said Haliti after the initial assessment on the ground.
Leaders of Kosovo’s institutions, including the Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, the director of KIA, Petrit Ajeti and the Minister of Local Government Administration, Elbert Krasniqi, were also present at the site of the excavations.
The authorities continue to work on the complete documentation of the case and the identification of possible victims, while the families of persons who have been missing for decades are still waiting for answers about the fate of their relatives.
