IBRI: Archaeological excavations carried out by the Department of Heritage and Tourism in Al Dhahirah Governorate uncovered skeletal remains and intact pottery vessels in ancient burial chambers, most of which date back to the Jemdet Nasr civilisation in Mesopotamia, and are dated to the third millennium BC, at a residential development site in Al Aynain, the Wilayat of Ibri.
Walid bin Hamad al Ghafri, Director of the Department of Heritage and Tourism in Al Dhahirah Governorate, told the ONA that the excavations were part of an archaeology operation at an ancient burial site within Al Aynain.
He said the operation was aimed at documenting and preserving archaeological evidence and protecting valuable artefacts from destruction due to rapid urban expansion in Al Aynain.
The excavations also uncovered copper and bronze artefacts, including arrowheads, axes and daggers, along with a large collection of beads dating to the same period.
The archaeological team will continue excavations at the site until the end of October.
Preliminary findings highlight the site’s archaeological significance and its potential to shed light on ancient cultural links between Oman and neighbouring civilisations.
The discoveries are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of Oman’s cultural heritage and enrich historical and archaeological knowledge. — ONA
