The presence of aflatoxin, AUV refuses the import of more than 25 tons of corn and prohibits the sale of feed for calves

The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV), during border controls and inspections in the internal market, has found the presence of aflatoxin above the allowed limits in the products of a company from Gjilan, taking measures to refuse import, ban sales and withdraw products.
During the border control of a load of 25 thousand 120 kg of commercial corn, the laboratory analyzes of AUV found aflatoxin B1 at a level of 30 µg/kg, while the analyzes of IKSHPK confirmed the total aflatoxin of 47 µg/kg, above the reference value of 10 µg/kg.
The Phytosanitary Inspectorate of AUV has decided to reject the import and return the cargo to the country of origin.
During further inspections, AUV’s laboratory analyzes found aflatoxin B1 above the allowed level in the product “Feed for calves up to 300 kg”. The AUV inspectorate has banned the sale and ordered the withdrawal of the identified product from circulation.
Aflatoxin B1 is a toxic substance produced by some types of mold that can cause liver damage and increase the risk of cancer during long-term exposure. In dairy animals, it can pass into the milk in the form of aflatoxin M1, posing a risk to food safety as well. /kp
