A group of Chartist senators, five dissident Colorados and five Libero-Cartists yesterday ignored the commitment they made when assuming their seats to respect and defend the National Constitution by endorsing a temporary permit questioned for its legality in favor of the Chartist senator Hernán David Rivas.

The 23 senators, including the affected person himself, the Chartist senator Hernán Rivas, violated article 199 of the permits which states that senators and deputies may only accept positions of minister or diplomat. To perform them, they must request permission from the respective Chamber, which they may return to at the end of those functions.

Some representatives of Chartism to try to alleviate criticism about the protection of the senator Hernan David Rivas, investigated for the alleged “mau” title of lawyer, they stated that several of them tried to convince the legislator to resign from his seat.

However, despite this, they were the most fervent defenders of carrying out the plan to grant Rivas permission to be absent from their bench – for an indefinite period -. A “rescue” until the waters calm down.

This is how the Senate voted on the request for permission from Senator Hernán Rivas.
This is how the Senate voted on the request for permission from Senator Hernán Rivas.

No senator dared to defend himself

Yesterday during the debate that was practically monopolized by senators from the opposition and the red dissidents, no senator from the ruling party or its allies dared to defend Hernán Rivas, in the face of strong criticism from his detractors.

The Chartist Senator Lizarella Brave He did defend but his father-in-law Óscar Rodríguez Kennedy, former dean of the Universidad Sudamericana where Rivas had supposedly studied.

Join the ABC channel on WhatsApp

In recent radio statements, Rodríguez confessed that he was forced to sign Rivas’s presumably false title, because supposedly if he did not do so he would expose himself to a lawsuit.

The opposition and the Colorado dissidents who had in their hands the possibility of rejecting the permit could not do so due to the escape of five dissident Colorado senators and five liberals allied to Chartism.

Despite the call of the Colorado presidential candidate Arnold Wiens (Añetete) voted in favor of granting permission to Rivas: Alfonso Noria, Colym Soroka, Ramón Retamozo, Derlis Osorio and Carlos Núñez Agüerothe latter even asked the plenary session to close the list of speakers.

The Chartist Senator Eric Galeano before He benefited from a similar decision despite his conviction for money laundering and criminal association.

This type of background reinforces the perception that the Senate is using political tools to avoid more severe sanctions, such as the loss of investiture.
