The Dominica Basketball Association (DABA) has announced the delegation that will represent the country at the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers, marking a significant milestone for basketball in Dominica.
According to a press release from the Association, the tournament will be the first time Dominica’s Senior Men’s National Basketball Team competes in an official FIBA tournament.
Dominica’s only previous appearance in a FIBA competition came in 2016 when the country participated at the junior level. Ten years later, the senior national team is set to make its international FIBA debut, a development the Association says is another important step in the growth of the sport.
DABA noted that participation in the tournament is expected to strengthen the national basketball programme by providing international exposure for both players and coaches while helping to create a stronger pathway for future national teams.
The Association also acknowledged the support of the Dominica Olympic Committee, whose contribution made the team’s participation in the competition possible.
The delegation will be led by Head Coach Donnie Robinson, with Abdulaziz Sanderson and Yannick Regis serving as assistant coaches. Curlyn Luke will travel as team manager, while Carl Munro will serve as team doctor.
Dr. Darroux PSC Falcons player Kijuan Thomas has been named captain of the 12-member squad.
The players selected are Andell Olivacce (Happi 767 Sports Club Dominators), Ethan Boland (Marigot Sunrise), Jacob Barry (Happi 767 Sports Club Dominators), Jaiden Scotland (BAA Sharks), Karim Daniel (Dr. Darroux PSC Falcons), captain Kijuan Thomas (Dr. Darroux PSC Falcons), Maxwell Birmingham (D Treads Blazers), Nathan Sebastien (Police Sports Club), Ramal Carbon (Dr. Darroux PSC Falcons), Shamar Felicite (Happi 767 Sports Club Dominators), Yawani Regis (Dr. Darroux PSC Falcons) and Zack Bastien (D Treads Blazers).
Dominica will open the tournament against the Turks and Caicos Islands at 5:30 p.m. on Day Two. The team will then face Guyana at 8:00 PM on Day Three, Antigua and Barbuda at 5:30 PM on Day Four, and Bermuda at 5:30 PM on Day Five.
In its release, the Association described the tournament as an important chapter in the country’s basketball history, noting that the selected players and staff will have the opportunity to represent Dominica on a new international stage.
DABA congratulates the team members on their selection and recognized the dedication and preparation that earned them national team honours. It also encourages Dominicans at home and in the diaspora to support the team throughout the competition.
The Association said Dominica’s progression from competing in a junior FIBA tournament in 2016 to making its senior FIBA debut in 2026 reflects the continued development of basketball on the island, as Team Dominica prepares to represent the Nature Island with “pride, discipline and determination.”
