Following the presentation of scholarships to four students entering secondary school, Dominica Electricity Services Ltd. (DOMLEC) has highlighted the 40-year history of the programme and its continued focus on educational support.
According to a DOMLEC press release, the 2026 awards were presented on Thursday, August 27, at the company’s Conference Room at the Engineering, Transmission and Distribution (ET&D) complex in Fond Colé.
The recipients are Merjhana Guiste, who will attend Portsmouth Secondary School; Daville Alexander and Kira Bertrand, who will both attend Dominica Grammar School; and Kaley Fabien, who will attend Arthur Waldron SDA Academy.
Each scholarship can provide assistance for up to five years, provided students maintain satisfactory academic performance. Support includes books, stationery, examination fees and transportation.
The programme has traditionally supported both children of DOMLEC employees and students from the wider community. This year, all four scholarships were awarded to students from the wider community.
Human Resources & Administration Manager Claudia Brumant said the programme’s 40-year milestone reflects DOMLEC’s longstanding involvement in education. She encouraged the students to remain committed and persevere when they encounter challenges during their secondary school years.
“The choices we make today create the lives we live tomorrow. In the five years of secondary school there will be days when the lessons are difficult, when hours are long and when you face challenges you don’t expect. Those moments call for a new level of dedication, commitment and perseverance,” she said.
DOMLEC Public Relations Officer Ayeola George said the programme helps ease the cost of education for families, allowing savings to be used for other areas of a child’s development or for the education of siblings.
“Today we had a past beneficiary return to not just share his experience but inspire a new generation of scholars. He advised attendees that he wants to also give back and contribute positively to other youth. This most certainly is an example of the wide-reaching impact of this award,” she added.
The ceremony also featured former scholarship recipient LynD Letang, son of DOMLEC employee Linton Letang, who returned to share his experience and encourage the new recipients. Letang said he hopes to give back and support other young people.
Scholarship recipient Kaley Fabien also presented DOMLEC with artwork portraying her vision of a renewable-energy future for Dominica.
Recipients are required to maintain satisfactory academic results, avoid repeating classes and submit report cards at the end of each term. They must also return programme textbooks in good condition at the end of each school year.
