The US Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear Donald Trump’s appeal of a jury awarding him $5 million in damages in a lawsuit filed by author E. Jane Kroll refused.
The Supreme Court judges rejected the request for an injunction without giving any explanation, and as a result, the lower court’s decision was upheld.
The decision preserves the outcome of the 2023 trial; A trial in which a federal jury indicted the US president for sexual harassment and defamation against E. Jane Kroll was found responsible following an encounter in a Manhattan department store in the mid-1990s.
The $5 million in restitution was the result of a lawsuit, not a criminal prosecution.
The rejection of the request to issue a hearing order means that the Supreme Court has refused to review the case referred to it. In such a case, the decision of the appeals court is considered final. This action does not mean confirming the lower court’s decision, but simply shows that the case did not have the necessary conditions to be heard in the Supreme Court.
Kroll also filed a separate lawsuit against Trump, in which a jury ruled that Trump must pay Kroll $83.3 million in damages for defamatory statements he made about him in 2019.
Trump reacted sharply to the Supreme Court’s decision to refuse to hear his appeal in the legal case – which he has referred to as a “bogus case”.
Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network: “I will continue to fight this case with all my strength and power, which uses the judicial system as a weapon and a tool for a legal war against me, including the ridiculous claim of defamation.”
He also emphasized that he has never met the plaintiff of this case and claimed that this lawsuit is actually an attack on the foundations of the country.
He also claimed that New York state passed a “tailor-made” law specifically to target him, adding that such “injustice” should never be allowed against any future president or presidential candidate.
