Toxicology is considered one of the most important sciences that combine medicine, chemistry, and forensic sciences, because of its contribution to detecting toxic and narcotic substances through blood analysis, as it determines their concentration and impact on health and behavior.
In this context, Professor Younis Zubeish, a researcher specializing in toxicology, explained, on the sidelines of the International Anti-Drug Day at the Pine Club Conference Center, that blood analysis enables the concentration of the narcotic substance to be measured at the time of drawing the sample, but in most cases it is not possible to accurately determine the original dose that the person took, and this is due to several factors, including the time that has passed since the use, the person’s weight, age, health condition, speed of metabolism, liver and kidney functions, and the frequency of use, i.e. an occasional or chronic user, so experts rely on interpreting the results within the clinical context or Criminal, not on the focus number alone.
Professor Zbeish, who was recently elected as a member of the International Narcotics Control Board, affiliated with the United Nations, for a term extending from 2027 to 2032, said that there are techniques used for the accuracy of analyzes that play a pivotal role, in investigating suspected causes of death, cases of driving under the influence of drugs, evaluating cases of acute poisoning, supporting judicial procedures with scientific evidence, and following up on patients in addiction treatment programs, noting that toxicology works to understand how these substances enter the body, and how Metabolism and elimination, in addition to assessing their health risks.
Medical treatment alone… Not enough
Professor Younis Zubaish believes that drugs do not only affect the person who uses them, because the toxins enter the body of the user, but their effect on behaviors and mentality is transmitted to the rest of the family members who become victims indirectly. He sent a message to the health sector, calling on doctors to deal with drug addicts within the framework of constructive dialogue without prejudice, because medical treatment alone is not enough, according to the speaker.
Zubaish emphasized that his personal experience, which he gained from his interaction with experts in international anti-drug meetings, proved to him that persuading the addict to quit drugs does not come only with warnings or punishment, but rather by spreading awareness and searching for mechanisms to attract young people to academic councils and motivate them to compete in this field away from the deadly vacuum and the bad friends who hunt their victims in spaces of despair and deviance.
He called on young people to have morals and a sense of responsibility and confront those who steal their dreams and curiosities for the sake of goals that do not serve drug and hallucinogenic pill dealers.
