The Ministry of Health announced the official designation of the Pasteur Institute Algeria as a regional center of excellence in the field of biosecurity and biosafety for the North African region, according to an official notification issued by the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
This appointment, according to the ministry’s statement issued today, is a continental recognition of the scientific standing enjoyed by the Pasteur Institute of Algeria, and the experience, competence and infrastructure it possesses in the fields of biosecurity and biosafety. It also embodies the confidence enjoyed by national competencies and Algerian scientific institutions in African health authorities.
This coronation comes, the statement adds, as the result of an accurate and comprehensive evaluation process, which began with the filing of the Institute’s candidacy file in October 2025, and culminated in a field visit conducted by a mission of experts from the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), during the month of February 2026, which resulted in the Pasteur Institute being accredited in Algeria as a regional reference center for North Africa.
This classification confirms, according to the Ministry of Health, the commitment of the Pasteur Institute of Algeria to continue performing its role as a national reference institution in the public health service, and to contribute to strengthening health security on the African continent, by developing capabilities, supporting training, and enhancing scientific and technical cooperation between the countries of the region. It also confirms Algeria’s position as a regional reference pole in the field of strengthening capabilities, building competencies, and controlling biological risks at the level of the North African region.
In the first activity that falls within the tasks of this regional center, the Pasteur Institute of Algeria, at the Sidi Faraj site, is hosting, starting today, Monday, a first-level regional training course in Bio-containment Engineering, for the benefit of experts and specialists from several countries in North Africa, who have been selected by the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
