A St. Vincent Girls’ High School (GHS) student died of cancer on Thursday, her graduation day.
A social media post began circulating during the graduation ceremony, requesting prayers and support for the student, Morica DaSilva, who was in the hospital with stage 4 cancer.
The school later announced that the Form 5 Technical student had died.
“Morica will be remembered for her kindness, intelligence, resilience, and warm friendship. She had a love for singing and dancing and was a valued member of the Loyal Hearts Ad Alta Choir. She also enjoyed crocheting and brought creativity and joy to those around her,” the school said in a social media post.
Earlier on Thursday, DaSilva was recognised with the Celina Cordice-Primus Award for Perseverance, “a testament to the determination, courage, and strength of character she displayed throughout her journey,” the post said.
“We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Morica’s parents, family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her. During this time of profound grief, we keep them in our thoughts and prayers and hope they find comfort in the love and support of those around them.
“Though she is no longer with us, her memory will forever remain a cherished part of the Girls’ High School family. Details regarding her funeral service will be shared as they become available.”
Meanwhile, the president of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers’ Union, Fiona Charles-Williams, expressed condolences to DaSilva’s mother, Marva DaSilva, who is a member of the union.
“… we are in sympathy and we offer condolences to Morica’s extended family and Marva’s extended family,” Charles-Williams said in a voicenote to union members.
“We offer condolences to the Headmistress and staff of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Girls’ High School as well as the graduating class of 2026,” she said.
“We are saddened by this loss, and we ask the Lord to give them comfort in their time of bereavement,” Charles-Williams further stated.
