A large part of the city of Uummannaq is without power and without coverage. Therefore, some important information from the authorities may be lost to the public. The mayor states that the authorities are working around the clock to solve the challenges and encourages citizens to spread the word.
A large part of Uummannaq has been without power since yesterday Monday after a fire in the city’s power plant.
This means that connections to TV, radio, internet and mobile telephony may drop out in a part of the city. As a result, a large part of the population may lack information about how the authorities act to mitigate the challenges caused by the power cut.
Mayor of Avannaata Kommunia Lars Erik Gabrielsen (S) calls on citizens of Uummannaq to share knowledge about the information they receive from authorities so that most citizens can know what actions are being taken:
– Communication is currently challenged. Therefore, I would like to encourage everyone to help share the information and messages that the authorities send out. In this way, we can ensure that important information reaches all citizens. At the same time, I would like to emphasize that it is important to follow the instructions and recommendations given by the authorities, says Lars Erik Gabrielsen in a short message via Avannaata Kommunia’s Facebook page.
A heating room must be established
Nukissiorfiit has announced earlier in the day that a ship is on its way with emergency generators that will be used to restart the electricity supply. However, the restoration work may result in several short-term power outages. It is expected that the ship will arrive at Uummannaq on Tuesday evening, after which work on re-establishing the supply will begin.
– The municipality is available to the citizens. You can contact the old meeting house, where you can cook and get the necessary help and service that is requested. At the same time, work is being done to establish a warming room, so that citizens in need can have a warm and safe place to stay, says Lars Erik Gabrielsen.
Temporary solutions are being worked on
There are about 1,400 citizens in Uummannaq. Nukissiorfiit has succeeded in re-establishing electricity supply to a third of the city. The most critical infrastructures are prioritized in Nukissiorfiit’s first part of the work with the re-establishment of electricity supply.
The mayor of Avannaata Kommunia emphasizes that work continues to find temporary solutions in this uncertain time:
– I know that the situation creates uncertainty and concern. Work is being done to establish temporary solutions as soon as possible, and I hope that we will see noticeable progress in the coming days. Until then, we must stand together, help each other and show solidarity, he says.
Pilersuisoq Uummannaq reported earlier in the day that the store is open but that some payment cards cannot be accepted. It is also reported that the sale of alcoholic beverages is suspended during the critical situation.
