‘On shore, their weight becomes deadly’: Why it’s hard to help a stranded whale

The sad fate of a stranded humpback whale in Germany raises bigger questions about whales in distress and how to help them.

On the fourteenth of May 2026, the carcass of a 12-meter-long humpback whale the waves washed ashore in the shallows of Anholt, an islet near Denmark.

It swayed on the waves, occasionally attacked by seagulls.

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed that it is Timi, whose nearly two-month-long rescue saga turned into a viral cautionary tale.

Timmy’s name comes from Timendorfer Strand, the German sandbar beach where the whale was originally spotted.

He was partially entangled in a fishing net, but remained submerged enough to survive for more than a month.

During that time, and after several failed rescue attempts, he gained millions of passionate fans around the world, who fought for his life.

After assessing Timmy’s condition, the International Whaling Commission advised that the most compassionate thing to do was to leave the animal to die on the beach.

Instead, two private donors reportedly paid approximately 1.5 million euros to have Timmy removed using a barge filled with water.

Keith survived only a few days after his release.

Many details of Timmy’s story remain unclear, but his suffering still raises an important, pressing question: How best to help a stranded whale?

With strandings skyrocketing in some parts of the world, that issue is becoming increasingly important.

    A dramatic increase

Strandings of marine mammals are increasing dramatically in areas where coastal water temperatures are rising due to climate change, such as the UK.

There has been an 800 per cent increase in strandings of lip whales in Scotland over the past 30 years, from 1992 to 2022, according to a report by the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Program (SMASS).

While there’s no single reason for this jump, the researchers concluded that warming waters driving prey further north played a role, along with more plastic pollution and noise from shipping.

Whale strandings can happen for a number of reasons, but are often because the animals are sick or injured, experts say.

“The two most common anthropogenic sources of stranding injuries are collisions with ships and entanglement with fishing gear,” says Andrew Reed, professor of marine biology and director of the Duke University Marine Laboratory in the US.

“But whales could also strand, dead or alive, if they are sick. Sick individuals usually show signs of a long illness, such as poor body condition.”

Stranding response teams from the US government agency National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in charge of ponds see evidence of this in studies and necropsies.

Sometimes it’s a mix of factors, among them malnutrition, biotoxins and cubs being separated from their mothers, says Rachel Hager, NOAA’s chief of public affairs for fish ponds.

Algal blooms, for example, can release biotoxins that make whales sick, causing them to strand.

These blooms can also inadvertently lead to strandings by creating “dead zones,” pockets of extremely low dissolved oxygen that occur when large algal blooms die and begin to decompose on the ocean floor.

Dead zones can kill the food supply for whales, causing them to drift closer to shore, where they strand. (Read more about the hidden dead zones spreading along the bottom of the Baltic Sea).

Weather changes can also disorient whales, as is believed to have been the case with the mass stranding of false killer whales off Tasmania in 2025.

“Some of the whales could have beached due to a navigational error or for social reasons – if one member of the group goes aground, we can see other members of the group go aground with them as they try to stay together,” says Natalie Arrow, marine vet and director of the Marine Mammal Veterinary Service and volunteer with British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), who deal with whale strandings.

It was the worst mass stranding in Tasmania in 50 years, and unfortunately, due to the strong waves, none of the animals could be rescued.

Returning the whale to the sea

It is relatively rare for a large whale to survive a stranding, according to NOAA.

Of the 201 large whales that stranded alive in the US between 2006 and 2025, only 17 managed to dislodge and swim away.

Only seven whales were beached with the help of human intervention.

Even when the whale is alive, its successful escape is rare.

Only 0.8 percent (15 whales) of the 1,939 whales stranded in the U.S. between 2006 and 2019 were returned to the sea (only 128 were alive when first found), according to another NOAA analysis.

The sheer size of the whales is another reason why it is so difficult to help them without further disturbing them.

Smaller cetaceans such as dolphins and turtles can be carried back to the water to return to the sea, experts say, but the process is much more difficult for whales.

“They usually cannot be moved in a way that is both safe for humans and does not cause the whale unwanted stress or risk of injury,” says Arrow.

“The humpback whale can reach up to 40,000 kilograms, and blue whales 140,000 kilograms.”

That’s the equivalent of 30 African elephants.

A stranded whale with a 7.5 meter long tail can accidentally kill you if you stand close to it while it is waving its tail.

Even when a stranded whale is otherwise healthy, its body can rapidly deteriorate.

“Cetaceans are not designed to be on land and their bodies are affected by what we call ‘stranding-related pathologies,'” says Arrow.

These can include dehydration, injuries from beaching, dried skin that begins to peel and split, and even hyperthermia, because the whale can no longer regulate its body temperature.

What happens inside the body of a stranded whale is even more drastic.

Symptoms of shock, such as difficulty breathing and blood pooling in the abdomen and chest, develop, and the whale’s weight can begin to crush its internal organs, Reid says.

“These animals live in water where their weight is not a problem. But on shore, their weight becomes deadly.”

If you come across a stranded whale

If you come across a stranded whale or any other large marine animal, the first thing you should do is call your local marine mammal stranding network, experts say.

In the US, NOAA lists them by region and state.

The UK has several different organizations you can contact based on your location.

When you contact them, they will ask you where you found the stranded animal and if you can provide them with any information about its current condition (is it moving, what does its skin look like, and are there any visible wounds, for example).

If the animal appears to be alive, it will advise you to stay away from it.

“We don’t recommend approaching a whale without direct advice to do so from an emergency response team,” says Arrow.

If there are other passers-by nearby, experts advise everyone to be quiet so as not to further disturb the whale.

Hager suggests taking pictures of the animal and the scene from different angles, and sending the photos to the emergency response team so they can track its status.

In some cases, if the stranding team declares the situation safe, bystanders can help keep the animal cool with water.

    Getty Images

Under no circumstances should people try to push or pull the animal back into the water, Hager warns.

Handling a stranded marine mammal or pushing it back into the water, even if it’s well-intentioned, can count as abuse of a protected species, which is illegal in the U.S., Hager says.

    When untwisting works

Once the emergency response team arrives and assesses the whale, they can attempt to return the whale to the sea if deemed healthy enough to do so.

According to experts, this is rare with such large whales or humpback and blue whales.

“We can almost never do a controlled release of a whale because they’re too big to move manually, even with the specialized cetacean rescue pontoons that some organizations have – they’re only for small whales,” says Arrow.

An emergency response team may engage bystanders in smaller whales or other marine mammals if it is deemed safe and appropriate to pull them away.

Each stranding case is unique and only a trained team member can make a decision regarding the animal’s welfare, Hager says.

    Euthanasia of a stranded whale

The decision to euthanize a stranded whale — that is, kill it to ease its suffering — is never an easy one, experts say.

“Euthanasia is the last resort used for an animal that has been declared unfit to survive,” says Jim Rice, director of the Stranded Animal Program at Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute.

However, even if the veterinarians present on the scene believe that this is the most merciful thing possible, it is not always possible.

For example, a very large amount of medication is required to euthanize a whale in a compassionate manner and can be difficult to administer.

Killing an animal with a firearm is also difficult given how thick its skin is – and, of course, euthanasia by any means requires special approval.

In Timmy’s case, German officials said euthanasia was not a viable option under the circumstances.

And then there is the issue of leftover animal carcasses.

If a whale has been euthanized with a chemical agent, its body must be disposed of properly, as it can poison scavengers.

If it dies of natural causes or without dangerous chemical assistance, the carcass is often left or buried on the beach where it ran aground.

Given the absence of other options, large whales are often left to die without intervention because it’s “the most humane and practical way,” Reid says.

This can take from a few hours to a few days.

To bystanders, it may seem cruel to leave an animal to die without attempting to intervene.

Marine experts sympathize with the outpouring of compassion and desire to save such a magnificent creature.

“Sea animals evoke very strong emotions in people, most of whom only want the best for that animal,” says Rice.

But people might have unrealistic expectations about what is feasible for an animal to survive, he adds.

By the time rescue operations to move Timmy began, he was likely already in a state of severely compromised health, and his chances of survival were extremely low, Arrow says.

“It’s not always in the animal’s best interest to return it to the sea, given its state of health and the cost and effort of stranding it alive,” says Hager.

For people who want to help whales at risk of stranding, a more effective point of intervention might be before the act itself: for example, through initiatives that prevent bycatch and entanglement and thus reduce the overall number of strandings.

Bycatch and entanglement with fishing gear kill an estimated 300,000 cetaceans each year – Timmy among them, it seems.
