Augustin Zegrean, former judge and president of CCRclaims that the cancellation of the 2024 elections has collapsed Romanians’ confidence in the democratic act. The jurist expressed his point of view in the context in which the government crisis is intensifying and more and more political leaders are talking about the scenario of early elections.
The mysterious cancellation of the 2024 elections “compromised” the elections in Romania, he believes Augustine Zegrean.
“Our elections were compromised. So the idea of elections is compromised. As long as elections have been canceled without any explanation, the idea of elections is compromised. Nobody believes in free elections anymore. I hear people saying: ‘anyway, they put whoever they want’. If it doesn’t turn out the way they want, they cancel it, don’t you see?”, declared Augustin Zegrean, for Newspapers.com.
In the opinion of the former CCR judge, citizens’ trust can no longer be saved, not even by suspending President Nicușor Dan.
“The trust of the citizens can no longer be saved. Suspending the president is another bad solution. Why should the president be suspended? Because the parliamentarians do not understand each other? But let’s remember that the Parliament suspended Traian Băsescu twice, although the Constitutional Court said that there were no reasons to justify this matter. The Court’s opinion had an advisory role,” the expert in constitutional law said.
Former leader of the governing coalition, critical of the cancellation of the 2024 presidential elections
A representative of the former coalition also had a critical speech on the cancellation of the 2024 elections, Kelemen Hunor. The leader UDMR showed that the “end of an era” signal was given in December 2024, at the time of the cancellation of the presidential elections, for which even today we do not have an explanation and society is still waiting for an explanation.
“Trivializing evil always starts with a small step. An apparently innocent step, a step that can be rationally explained, a step that goes beyond values, a step that goes beyond principles, beyond principles without which a society based on trust cannot be created. Go beyond principles and the political battlefield becomes extremely, extremely cloudy,” Hunor said in Parliament.
Until recently, the challenge to the annulment of the elections came from Călin Georgescu, from the parliamentary opposition – AUR, POT, SOS and Elena Lasconi.
Nicușor Dan promised since the presidential campaign that he would present a report on the cancellation of the elections, in a short time, but it did not appear even today.
