The Parliamentary Energy and Mineral Resources Committee, headed by MP Dr. Ayman Abu Haniyeh, discussed during a meeting held today, Wednesday, the recommendations of the Jordanian Strategy Forum related to the National Electricity Company’s debt.
The committee listened to a presentation by the Executive Director of the Forum, Nisreen Barakat, and an intervention from the Directorate of Corporate Control and Final Accounts at the Audit Bureau, Abdul Muti Al-Harahsheh, about the reality of indebtedness, its developments, and the most prominent financial and operational challenges associated with it.
The committee discussed the reality of the company’s debt and its repercussions on the energy sector, the most prominent challenges facing the company, and ways to deal with them in a way that enhances the sustainability of the sector and raises the efficiency of its performance.
Abu Haniyeh stressed that the electricity sector is facing accumulated challenges related to the high operational and financial costs, including the cost of purchasing energy and re-examining contracts and agreements, to ensure achieving a balance between the legal, technical and financial aspects.
Representatives Jamal Qamwa, Khader Bani Khaled, Rakin Abu Haniyeh, Iman Al-Abbasi, Saleh Abu Tayeh, and Talal Al-Nsour stressed following up on the recommendations of the Center for Strategic Studies to address the debt of the National Electricity Company and improve the efficiency of the energy sector.
For her part, Barakat said that the electricity sector debt crisis in Jordan dates back to the year (2011-2013), which led to reliance on heavy fuel and diesel and raised the cost of production, which led to the accumulation of debt.
For his part, Al-Harahsheh explained that the Audit Bureau plays an analytical supervisory role in following up on the National Electricity Company’s debt during the period (2024-2026), by evaluating the financial and operational performance and monitoring the development of the debt and its impact on financial sustainability.
