Three people were killed in a shooting in Montreal’s Jewish quarter on Monday, the Canadian Police. According to the information, a passerby, a policeman and the perpetrator lost their lives, a policewoman was injured.
The authorities announced before 10 p.m. Hungarian time that the emergency situation is over, the Côte-des-Neiges area is secured by the police, but the area is still closed to traffic. The investigation continues, information on the circumstances of the incident and the motive of the culprit was promised later.
“It is with deep regret that we confirm the death of one of our police officers” – wrote the police on X. Authorities previously warned people of an “armed and dangerous suspect” and told them to avoid the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood.
“At this time, the motive is not yet known,” Quebec Homeland Security Minister Ian Lafreniere said. The Zaka Jewish rescue service stated that the incident took place near one of the centers of the Hasidic Lubavitch Chabad movement founded in the 18th century, and did not rule out the possibility of an assassination attempt. However, Canadian police have not confirmed this so far.
A large police force was deployed in a residential area in western Montreal, home to many Jewish shops and restaurants. Footage published on social media shows the suspect lying on the ground wearing a military uniform.
