Up to 5,000 visitors a weekend: Authorities urge responsible behaviour at Upper Sûre Lake as summer crowds return

Luxembourg is currently experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures soaring well above 30°C and a long weekend just around the corner. As people and animals alike seek relief from the heat, the region around the Upper Sûre Lake, known locally as the Stauséi, is expected to attract thousands of visitors in the coming days.

Authorities are urging everyone to follow the rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

    Parking and shuttle buses

Visitors are encouraged to use one of the two large car parks near Lultzhausen and Insenborn, rather than driving directly into the villages or trying to park close to the lakeside beaches. A dedicated shuttle bus service will transport visitors from the parking areas to the water.

According to Mirelle Welter, mayor of Esch-sur-Sûre, one should avoid driving into the villages or right up to the beaches if possible, as “it simply does not make sense”.

Welter also emphasised the importance of not parking illegally, given that in case of an emergency, “responders need to be able to access the site as quickly as possible”.

Designated barbecue areas are available for visitors, including eight fixed spots at the Fuussewiss area, as well as additional facilities in Lultzhausen. “All you need to bring is what you want to put on the grill”, Welter explains.

Officials are appealing to everyone not to leave rubbish behind on the beaches or in the meadows at the end of the day. A new waste separation system has been introduced at Fuussewiss to encourage recycling, with separate bins for plastic and general waste.

    Visitors from across the region

On a summer weekend, the Upper Sûre Lake can attract between 3,000 and 5,000 visitors. It is not only residents of Luxembourg who flock to the lake; many regular visitors come from across the Greater Region, including Belgium and France.

However, Mayor Welter stressed that the general rules, such as not parking illegally, using the designated car parks, and observing speed limits, must be respected by everyone.

The police have also issued a reminder that they will be carrying out checks over the weekend and on National Day to ensure visitors are adhering to the rules.
