A Florida man tried to hijack an emergency helicopter after causing a traffic accident, writes the New York Post.
Police say 29-year-old Riley Ferrer was northbound on Interstate 75 around midnight Friday when he lost control of his pickup truck. The vehicle drifted off the road, collided with another car, and overturned in a wooded area along the road.
Two people were seriously injured in the accident, so an ambulance helicopter was called to the scene. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office closed the northbound lanes of the highway for the time of the crash.
According to the authorities’ report, while the ambulances were preparing to transport the injured by helicopter, Ferrer tried to steal the helicopter, but was unsuccessful. According to the article, the man previously claimed to have seen the Antichrist.
Arriving police took him into custody and then transported him to Brooksville Hospital. According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Ferrer refused to enter the building and was escorted inside and later resisted the action several times.
After a medical examination, he was taken to the Hernando County Jail, where authorities say he continued to resist officers. He was charged with three counts of nonviolent resistance to official action and one count of trespassing into a vehicle in use.
According to local jail records, he could be released on bail on the resisting charges, but is being held without bail in the helicopter case.
No details have yet been released about the condition of the other two people injured in the accident.
