Germany and Ukraine have laid the groundwork for the joint development of an anti-missile air defense system. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the signing of the agreement during the meeting of the contact group on Ukraine and NATO defense ministers. “Several German companies have expressed interest in this project. It can make an important contribution to the security of Europe and Ukraine,” Pistorius said, emphasizing that such cooperation has long been more than one-sided, referring to Ukrainian innovations and experience.
At the same time, Pistorius announced an additional $400 million for weapons to Ukraine. Half of that amount will be allocated within the framework of the Purl program intended for the purchase of American weapons, which operates from the summer of 2025, according to the agreement signed between NATO and US President Donald Trump. In addition, Berlin will allocate 200 million dollars for the purchase of guided missiles for the Patriot air defense system.
According to Pistorius, Germany, which co-chairs the contact group on Ukraine with the United Kingdom, is taking a leading role in providing new military aid to Kiev.
“With this step, we want to encourage other members of the contact group on the defense of Ukraine to also participate in financing the purchase of PAC-3 guided missiles,” said the German Defense Minister.
