From diet and exercise to reactions and habits, there are many differences between dogs and cats that we are more or less familiar with. But what we don’t all know is that these two animals they are surprisingly similar in some things.
Knowing what cats and dogs have in common helps us understand them better. And not only that. It also helps to create a balanced environment so that cohabitation with them has no problems.
Let’s see what these two animals have in common.
1. They communicate through their body language
A very important similarity is that both the dogs as much as cats rely on their body language to communicate.
Although dogs bark and cats meow, the primary way they communicate is with their bodies. Their body language – postures and movements – it is indicative of many things.
However, while they may communicate with their body language, they don’t always do so for the same reason. For example, when a dog is happy, it wags its tail and opens its mouth. On the contrary, a cat she opens her mouth and wags her tail when she is angry. We for our part it is useful to know the differences in the body language of the two animals, especially if we have both pets at home. By understanding what they are trying to tell us we strengthen our bond with them.
2. They have territorial instincts
Dogs are known for their strong territorial instincts. It may surprise you that cats have similar instincts. In other words both animals are territorial, which means that they protect things they consider importantsuch as food, toys or where they live. But even though their territorial instincts are similar, the way they react differs significantly.
For example, cats rub against objects or urinate to mark their territory and drive other cats away from their space. On the contrary, dogs are more social. They form packs for companionship and hunting and do not use scratching to demarcate their territory. But both say: “This is my territory.”
Stray cats are now highly territorial. They spray on pillars, cars, bushes as a way to show other cats that they are the ‘leaders’.
Cats feel threatened much more easily compared to a dog and often they are naturally wary of unfamiliar catswhile a dog may be more friendly or receptive to another dog when it meets him.
However, both dogs and cats have their own distinct personalities and their behavior varies greatly depending on the circumstances.

3. They have strong hunting instincts
Another striking similarity between cats and dogs is their hunting instincts. Both animals they hunt for survival. In nature, cats and dogs hunt and forage. Although they are not taught how to hunt, they have a naturally strong prey drive.
Both animals can easily neutralize their prey when needed. Cats usually hunt mice, birds and other smaller animals, while dogs hunt larger animals such as rabbits and squirrels.
4. They create meaningful bonds with their people
Both species form meaningful bonds with the humans who care for them. Dogs usually are more expressiveconstantly seeking attention and companionship, while cats may express their love in more subtle ways.
Dogs thrive through social interaction with people and other dogs. Cats can be more independent, but they still need affection and play.
5. They listen better than humans
Cats and dogs have much more developed hearing than humans. This of course does not apply to newborn puppies, as they are born deaf and fully acquire their hearing at around three weeks of age.
Both dogs and cats they use their ears to express their feelings and have excellent hearing. In addition, they share the ability to move their ears to different positions, thanks to the large number of muscles that control ear movements.
As we have seen these two species share several very important similarities. Whether you prefer the devoted companionship of a dog or the independent charm of a cat, know that both animals offer unique joys. But if you want to live with both a dog and a cat, the only thing that is certain is that your life will be full of wonderful experiences and unique moments.
