On Wednesday, Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan thanked the national football team for its performance in its match against Austria, at the beginning of its campaign in Group 10 of the 2026 World Cup finals.
Hassan said in a tweet on the “X” platform, “The players of the national team raised the Jordanian flag high in the World Cup, and made an outstanding effort in their first match.”
He added, “All Jordanian men and women stand with the national team and are proud of it, and we wish them success in the upcoming matches.”
The Prime Minister’s tweet came after the national team’s participation in its first match in the tournament against Austria.
The match ended with the national team losing to Austria with a score of 3-1, as the Austrian team took the lead through Romano Schmid in the 20th minute, before Ali Alwan equalized for Al-Nashama in the 50th minute, scoring the first goal for Jordan in the history of its participation in the World Cup.
Austria returned to the lead in the 76th minute with an own goal scored by Yazan Al-Arab by mistake against his country’s team while trying to clear a ball from a corner kick, before Marko Arnautovic added the third goal from a penalty kick in stoppage time.
The national team is preparing to face Algeria in the second round of the group stage, before concluding its campaign in the first round by meeting Argentina.
