On June 17, waffles have a special place on the coffee tables of the people. For many people, they are an essential part of the celebrations, and nothing evokes the aroma, warmth and homely atmosphere as strongly as freshly baked waffles served with a good side dish. When the banquet table has been laden with delicacies, the waffles are usually the last to be served, but more often than not, they disappear from the table first.
The history of the waffle is both long and intriguing. Its origin can be traced all the way back to the ancient Greeks, where cakes were baked between two metal plates and they were called obelios. Later, waffles continued to develop in Western Europe, and from there the word waffle has its roots, among other things from the Dutch word waffle.
Belgian waffles are popular
In this country, for many years, waffles have been associated with both everyday conviviality and festive occasions. They have therefore long earned a place as one of the nation’s most loved pastries. When the Belgian waffles came even stronger into the food scene, many were instantly fascinated by them, as they are both juicy, golden and extremely tempting.
Since June 17th is tomorrow, we share here a wonderful recipe for Belgian waffles from Eva Laufeyja Kjaran. It’s a bullet-proof recipe that will be a hit, as the waffles are served with chocolate and fresh strawberries, a combination that suits the festive day exceptionally well.
