It was Petr Popelka’s first concert in Vienna since his appointment as general music director of the Bavarian State Opera – the next stop in a steep career based on musicality and collegiality rather than marketing for a conductor who played the double bass in Dresden just seven years ago. The Munich musicians are happy. Rightly so, how Popelka in Vienna, in the symphony’s last music club concert of the season, which was crowned – at times loudly – with Schumann’s secular oratorio “Paradise and the Peri”.
