The association “I want to help refugees” will install two more tombstones for unidentified dead border violators today, the board member of the association Elvīra Brinkmane-Druze informed LETA agency.
This year, it is planned to install tombstones for two women who were buried on May 16 and May 20 last year.
Tombstones will be installed in Zaščirina cemetery of Ezernieku parish of Krāslava county and Grīnvalde cemetery of Šedere parish of Augšdaugava county for people who died after crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border and were buried as unidentified. The information available to the association shows that between October 2023 and April 2026, 11 people died and were buried unidentified after crossing the border between Latvia and Belarus.
These persons are buried by the municipalities in whose territory the mortal remains were found, but further maintenance of the burial places is not planned, the association states.
Association In November 2024, the first two tombstones were installed in the Old Silene cemetery of the Skrudalien parish of the Upper Daugava region, while last June, seven tombstones were installed in the Zaščirina cemetery of the Ezernieku parish.
The tombstones will be displayed with the funds donated to the society.
