Giant concrete columns are being placed piece by piece: They will connect four islands

The foundation of the project was laid in 2021 and construction work started in the same year. As part of the work, hundreds of pile foundations are placed on the seabed, while giant concrete pieces produced on land are transported to the site by ships and mounted on the bridge piers. The project, which was initially planned to be completed in 2025, was postponed several times due to various delays. While it was announced that approximately 52 percent of the project was completed by 2026, the latest official evaluations stated that the opening date was postponed to 2027.

GIANT CONNECTION OF 6.74 KILOMETERS ON THE OCEAN

When completed, uninterrupted transportation will be provided between Malé, the most densely populated region of the Maldives, and the surrounding development areas. The project includes three large bridge sections, viaducts extending in deep and shallow waters, and road connections. Authorities state that Thilafushi Island, which is especially developed as an industrial and logistics center, will benefit greatly from the project.

Today, transportation between the islands is largely provided by boats, but with the completion of the bridge, vehicle traffic will be possible directly. The project is expected to reduce density in the capital and accelerate the development of new residential areas.

GIANT INVESTMENT OF 500 MILLION DOLLARS

It is stated that the total cost of the Greater Malé Connectivity Project is approximately 500 million dollars. While $100 million of the financing is provided as a grant, $400 million is covered by loan support. This figure makes the project one of the most expensive infrastructure investments in the history of the Maldives.

Authorities state that after the completion of the project, it will not only facilitate transportation but also increase economic activities and pave the way for new industrial, commercial and residential areas. This giant connection rising above the ocean is expected to play a critical role in the future growth of the Maldives.
