Before the start of the World Cup, the world football governing body (FIFA) has published its latest ranking. While the Hungarian national team is moving up, there is also movement at the very top of the world rankings.
In the newest edition of the FIFA World Ranking, the Hungarian national football team coached by Marco Rossi has climbed three places and now sits in 39th position.
The rise of the team is the result of a successful preparation phase.
Since April 1, the Hungarian national team played two friendly matches and remained unbeaten. In Budapest’s Puskás Aréna, the team recorded a 2–1 victory over Finland, followed by a confident 3–1 win against Kazakhstan in Debrecen. These victories not only boosted the players’ confidence, but also earned valuable FIFA ranking points.
At the top of the FIFA rankings, there was a change shortly before the World Cup opening match. Reigning world champions Argentina climbed from third place directly to first, overtaking the competition. “La Albiceleste” now leads the table ahead of European champions Spain. Previously number one, France dropped to third place. Meanwhile, Germany remains unchanged in 10th place.
For the Hungarian team, the new ranking also serves as a benchmark for the upcoming autumn fixtures. Starting in September, Nations League matches will again count for competitive points. Hungary will compete in Division B (the second tier of the competition).
A look at the upcoming opponents shows a mixed field: the strongest team in the group, Ukraine, is ranked 32nd in the world. Northern Ireland is currently 70th, while Euro participant Georgia sits in 72nd place.
The autumn campaign begins with a major clash: on September 25, the Hungarian national team will host Ukraine at Puskás Aréna for its opening match.
