The Portuguese second league team Torreense produced a surprise by winning the Portuguese Cup on Sunday evening, after defeating Sporting Lisbon, quarter-finalist this season of the Champions League, 2-1 after extra time.

Torreense opened the scoring at the Estadio Nacional in the 4th minute through Kevin Zohi, and the runners-up pushed hard for an equaliser, which they managed in the 54th minute when Luis Javier Suarez scored.

As after 90 minutes the score remained 1-1, it went into extra time. Referee Antonio Nobre sent off Maximiliano Araujo in the 119th minute, for a foul from the position of the last defender, and the team from the second league received a penalty, which Stopira, the defender from Cape Verde, converted in the 113th minute.

Torreense prevailed 2-1 and won a major Portuguese trophy for the first time in a history of over a century. It is the second time after 2018 that the Portuguese Cup has been won by a team from the second division.

In 2018, Desportivo das Aves beat Sporting Lisbon, 2-1, but did not play in the continental cups because they had not obtained the European license.
