South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said that his country’s traditional dependence on the United States in the field of defense is no longer appropriate, stressing that Seoul will seek to become a partner capable of defending itself.
In statements during his visit to Italy today, Myung stressed that his country will also work to expand its economic cooperation with the United States, describing this as an important factor in what he called a new approach that he said will better serve the national interests of the Republic of Korea in light of the shift in the geopolitical environment.
In this regard, he noted that expanding economic cooperation with Washington to include advanced technology sectors will be an important factor in enhancing his country’s industrial competitiveness, indicating that the alliance between the two countries remains the “primary axis” of Seoul’s diplomacy, stressing the need to strengthen internal capabilities as a means of modernizing the alliance.
Myung pointed out that autonomous capabilities mean becoming a trustworthy partner capable of assuming the responsibility of defending yourself without relying on an ally, explaining that Seoul’s efforts to regain operational control of South Korean forces in wartime from Washington are in line with the new approach, adding that this is also consistent with what the United States wants.
