The Sudanese embassy in Tripoli said its nationals in Libya, including those registered with the UN refugee agency, did not wish to be resettled in the country and instead sought voluntary return to Sudan.
The embassy expressed appreciation to Libya, both its people and authorities, for hosting Sudanese nationals who had fled the war and reported violations in Sudan.
It also praised cooperation by the Government of National Unity on voluntary returns, saying this had helped complete the first phase of the programme before the Eid al-Adha holiday.
Preparations were under way to begin a second phase, it added.
The embassy reiterated Sudan’s readiness to receive citizens returning voluntarily, as well as deportees subject to removal orders issued by Libyan judicial authorities.
The comments come amid recent debate in Libya over migrants and foreign labour, accompanied by protests outside the UN refugee agency’s headquarters in Tripoli.
Demonstrators objected to what they described as attempts to resettle foreign migrants in the country.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya denied “rumours” about any such resettlement programmes, saying the claims were entirely unfounded.
