This event coincides with the celebration of the International Sagarmatha Day (the Nepali name for Mount Everest), on May 29 of each year, in commemoration of the first successful ascent to the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.
In his speech on this occasion, Ambassador Tirtha Raj Wagli explained that Nepal is home to eight out of fourteen mountains in the world whose height exceeds eight thousand metres, including Mount Everest, making it one of the most prominent global destinations for mountaineering and adventure tourism. He reviewed a number of achievements and stories written by adventurers, skiers and climbers on Mount Everest.
The ambassador added that Nepal enjoys distinctive cultural diversity, with a population of about thirty million people, and includes 142 ethnic groups and 122 mother languages. Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its Outstanding Universal Value.
In addition, the nature of Nepal represents a critical location for studying the effects of climate change on snow and glaciers. Nepal is on the front lines of efforts to combat climate change. In May 2025, it launched the first edition of the “Sagarmatha Dialogue,” a global platform for dialogue under the slogan: “Climate change, mountains, and the future of humanity.” In addition to climate change, Mount Everest faces a growing challenge of environmental pollution. To address this problem, the Government of Nepal has launched periodic mountain clean-up campaigns in cooperation with local Sherpa communities.
On the other hand, the Nepalese Ambassador praised Bahrain’s welcome, generous hospitality, and keenness to protect its citizens and residents and ensure their safety in various circumstances and challenges. Stressing that the Kingdom has proven that followers of different religions, cultures and nationalities are capable of living and working together within a framework of mutual respect and solidarity.
He praised the Kingdom’s continued achievements in the fields of diplomacy, dialogue, tourism, sports, empowerment and social progress.
He said: “I take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and to the friendly people of Bahrain, for their steadfast friendship and continued support.”
The friendship between Bahrain and Nepal is also embodied in the mountain peaks. In May 2021, a team from the Bahraini Royal Guard succeeded in reaching the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the first Bahraini team to achieve this historic achievement. It is noteworthy that during his phone call with the Bahraini climbers after their arrival at the summit, His Majesty the King congratulated them, saying: “Bahrain’s message from the highest peak in the world is that peace and security prevail throughout the world.” In August last year, we witnessed the creation of a new memorial in Bahrain to commemorate this historic achievement.
We were greatly influenced by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who opened this memorial at the Rawda Camp roundabout, making it an inspiring landmark that embodies the spirit of friendship and steadfastness.
The Ambassador expressed his thanks to the Nepalese community for its sincerity and dedication in performing its work and contributions to the development process in the Kingdom of Bahrain. !
Then, the Bahraini adventurer and writer, Mohammed Issa, spoke about his personal experience in tourism in Nepal, and the most prominent tourist events and sites that he visited, stressing that it is an exceptional experience that deserves to be lived by everyone interested in tourism.
