The rally in front of the Serbian National Theater in Novi Sad ended tonight with the announcement by students of the “Jovan Jovanović Zmaj” Gymnasium that they will boycott classes starting tomorrow, as they are not satisfied with the way the director of that institution, Radivoje P. Stojković, runs the school.
The school year in Vojvodina secondary schools lasts until June 19.
Several hundred citizens gathered this evening at the “Last hour to save Jovina” protest, which was organized by the students’ parents, the Beta agency reporter reported.
The mother of one of the students, Bojana Stanić, asked the Provincial Secretariat for Education and the Ministry of Education to solve the crisis in that school that has been going on for months.
“The minister (Dejan Vuk Stanković) within his powers has the possibility to remove director Stojković and thereby create conditions for the election of a new director and thereby calm the situation,” said Stanić.
She said that parents are not looking for a miracle, but the application of the law and “a director who will be able to talk to people.”
The students’ mothers read the children’s anonymous testimonies about the situation in the school and how the students feel because of the specific situation in that educational institution.
Professor Mikica Sibinović of the Faculty of Geography said that the future belongs to the students, not to the “principal who is kneeling”.
“The government is a wounded beast and is fighting against all of us and our youth, but we must not allow youth to lose. By fighting for Jovina Gymnasium, you are fighting for the entire education system. Victory is getting closer every day,” said the professor.
During the protest on the Theater Square, the choir of Jovina Gymnasium sang the national anthem of Serbia “Bože pravde”, the national anthem of that school and several other songs.
Those gathered carried banners “We don’t give teachers”, “We don’t give Jovin Gymnasium” and others.
The crowd is currently dispersing, there were no incidents during the rally, and the police regulated traffic while the column of citizens walked from Futoška pijaca to Theater Square.
